The James Berry Emerging Scholar Award is a national distinction bestowed annually by the International Council of Professors of Educational Leadership (ICPEL). This prestigious honor recognizes early-career scholars and rising faculty members whose exceptional research, teaching, and service demonstrate outstanding promise and meaningful impact in the field of educational leadership.

Core Pillars of the Award
The award targets emerging scholars—defined as faculty members within the first 2 to 7 years of their academic career—who have pushed the boundaries of traditional school administration. Specifically, this honor is awarded to those who demonstrate remarkable leadership and vision for “Learning in a Global Educational System.”
The ICPEL Review Committee evaluates all nominees across four distinct dimensions:

Specifically, this honor is awarded to those who demonstrate remarkable leadership and vision for “Learning in a Global Educational System.”
The ICPEL Review Committee evaluates all nominees across four distinct dimensions:
- Eligibility & Career Stage: Actively working within the critical 2-to-7-year early-career window.
- Scholarly Contributions: Production of high-quality published articles, books, or papers that add vital new knowledge or innovative practices to educational leadership and global educational systems.
- Measurable Impact: Evidence of a positive, equity-driven influence on policy, the adoption of educational practices, or the development of aspiring school leaders (including assistant principals, principals, superintendents, and higher education professors).
- Innovation: The introduction of fresh methodologies, creative problem-solving, or new technologies to address complex issues in global educational leadership.
Nomination Guidelines & Process
Nominations may be submitted by peers, mentors, or via self-nomination. While any scholar in the field may be nominated, the nominator must be a current member of ICPEL. (Please note: extra weight is applied during scoring if the nominee is also an active ICPEL member).

Submission Deadline: All completed nomination packages must be submitted digitally by May 1st annually.
The Nomination Package Must Include:
- The nominee's current Curriculum Vitae (CV).
- A comprehensive Statement of Contributions (a dedicated document clearly addressing how the nominee meets the 4 criteria: Eligibility, Contributions, Impact, and Innovation).
- Formal letters of support from colleagues or mentors.

Selection Process
Nomination
- Nominations can be submitted by peers, mentors, or self-nominations.
- Nomination packages should include a CV, a statement of contributions, and letters of support.
Board Approved Review Committee
- A diverse committee of respected scholars and practitioners in the field of educational leadership
- Ensure the committee includes members with expertise in research, teaching, and service.
Evaluation
- The committee reviews nomination packages based on the established criteria.
- Each nominee is scored on their contributions, impact, and innovation.
Shortlisting
- The top candidates are shortlisted based on their scores.
- Shortlisted candidates may be asked to provide additional materials or participate in an interview.
Final Selection
- The committee deliberates and selects the award recipient(s) based on the overall evaluation.
- The decision is communicated to the recipient(s) and announced publicly.
Award Presentation
- The award is presented at the annual ICPEL conference or another significant event.
- The recipient(s) may be invited to give a keynote address or present their work.
The James Berry Emerging Scholar Award is reviewed by a board-approved, diverse committee of respected scholars and is officially presented each summer at the ICPEL Annual Conference.
